ITS ALL ABOUT PROFESSIONAL/HOME RECORDING

ABOUT ME

So, for a quick peak, lemme introduce myself. I am Mohammad Sanour, people call me Sunny, and even I expect people here to call me SUNNY…just a thought!!! Ufff!!! By profession, a sound engineer, currently working at Mumbai, with Sandeep Chowta, At his studio, YATRA. Have been working around for 7-8 years, and whatever I am gonna write/suggest here, will be myself, and not extracted from anywhere. Coz I am a self learned guy and please dnt tweak knobs like ‘Where did u learn all this, Who taught u’. Hahaha.. All the resources for me are songs and songs listening, and work. Even few from the internet and few learned with lotz of musicians/technicians around, and still in the process of learning.

ABOUT RECORDING/MIXING

Recording/Mixing/Mastering is an art and really not like some people around, who know how to tweak knobs on softwares, or know how to operate softwares. But I do believe that a musician, who can tweak knobs or operate mouse well in any software, can be a good sound engineer, because music is the heart and soul of Recording/Mixing/Mastering. Most of the sound engineers around wont agree with the fact that music knowledge is important even for recording, then they r wrong. I remember, the beginning stage of my career, when I really had big problems, becoz I do not have any musical background. Once I got in the job, I worked at a very good studio, where I really got a chance to learn more about music, not through anyone, but with lots of clients/musicians. That time I was already a fast guy@work, but when I really got some idea about music, it made me flying on my mixer and projects. And that was when I realized the importance of music for sound engineers. So even for beginners, who are taking courses of sound engineering at huge money charging institutes, be sure to learn some musical instrument/vocals, or else you will end up being only an assistant for years together, or else trying to change your field, from music recording to dialogue dubbing or ON-SET sounds.

Some people around will surely ask me lots of question about endless topics, but please dnt think I will not be replying. I will do it, and that’s why I am here. Coz we can see lots of professional/amateur people around, who will be having lots of questions, and I am here to tell them and learn even new things/problems by their questions.

WHO’S A SOUND ENGINEER

Ya..So for the people around, who donno what is a sound engineer, or audiography, please do refer to wikipedia or do a google, coz right now, this is not a correct place for me to do it. Ya maybe if anyone asks, then I will surely try and throw some light on it, or maybe later in this article, I am gonna make it..

Sound engineer/audiographer have many options of working at:

1. Music/Background score recording studios
2. Stereo Mixing studios
3. DTS/DOLBY/SURROUND premix studios
4. DTS/DOLBY/SURROUND Mix studios
5. Dubbing studios
6. Live sound/On stage PA systems
7. On sets (of movies/serials) dialogues recording

Above options are like mainly categorized, and others are few departments, which I even dnt have any idea. . :)

Music/Background recording studios and Stereo Mixings studios are seen mostly at one place, meaning, one studio only. I have just split it for people to understand departments and any resemblance to any studio living/dead is purely co-incidental. :)

So there can be recording engineers, mixing engineers, dubbing engineers, Live sound engineers etc etc, who have their own importance in this glamorous Industry.

ASK YOUR DOUBTS

The final thing is that right now I am not getting much idea on what to write further, because I need questions to answer, and I cant write everything here, becoz I will be writing an endless book. Will be adding/editing things further.

So kindly come further, do ask me whatever you want to, regarding home/professional recording, equipments, gadgets or any funny or serious queries about this job or recording/mixing/mastering techniques.
